Town Administrator’s Report

Mr. Warrington we have completed our annual audit and this matter will be discussed at the November 20th Worksession.  The Worksession has been moved up a week because of the Thanksgiving holiday.  They will be wrapping-up the paving for WSSC and those roads are looking great.

Chief’s Report

Chief Robshaw our electronic management system is up and operational.  All our paperwork is done electronically and sent via the patrol cars to the office.  Our crime is down over 8% from last year.  We had no incidents for Halloween.  We are looking for anyone interested in a woman’s self defense class, which we have run before.  We are doing home surveys at no cost to the homeowner.

Mayor we had someone leave the hospital that the police were looking for, does that happen often?

Chief Robshaw that does happen a few times a year, but unless you are committed by a judge, then it is difficult to get them to return.  The law has changed regarding commitments and most often when they leave, they come right into Cheverly.

Recreation Council

CM Eldridge on December 6th is the Holiday Party here in the Community Center.

Mayor the 5th is the tree lighting, the 6th is the holiday party and Santa’s Secret Shop.  The Yule Log will be at Legion Park after the 5th.

Green Infrastructure Committee

Mayor the major activity has been them working with the National Park Service to do some improved stormwater management activities on the property where they just removed the three houses.  There are 30 new composting bins and they will be selling them at the community market.

Cheverly Day Committee

CM Thorpe Cheverly Day will be May 16th.  When we do meet it will be the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm.

Cheverly Planning Board

CM Eldridge they did not meet this month due to the holiday.  We did meet with some MNCPPC folks to discuss the Sector Plan proposed. They gave us some updates on the Landover Road corridor plan and it is about to be adopted.  The final item was the proposed Metro rail yard at the Landover Metro Station.  It is in conflict with the Landover Plan, which called for development in the area where the new rail yard is proposed. We have information on the Town website in News and Announcements.  I encourage folks to show up and comment at the upcoming public hearing.

Citizen Input

Mayor and Council Announcements

CM Coolen we will have a Community Market next Saturday, November 22nd.  We will be selling Christmas trees at the market. They are grown in Maryland the they are cut fresh to last the whole season.  The Cheverly Village forum from a few weeks ago was an afternoon of discussion of aging in place and about 50 people came out and it we came up with a number of suggestions to form a 501C3.  Contact Councilmember Riazi if you are interested.

CM Eldridge I want to remind folks about the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.  You can type in Cheverly Turkey Trot to find the application.

CM Cook I want to remind you that Meals on Wheels is available in Cheverly for elderly residents and you can contact them by calling 301-927-5615.

Mayor CUMC auction is on November 22nd tickets are $35.  The Worksession will be next Thursday and we are going to talk about: the House Decorating Contest, Community Market Grant Request, the FY14 Audit, Metro rail yard discussion, the Ridge Development, MNCPPC Meeting Review, Pepco Trimming.

V-81-14 for 5719 Forest Road

Mayor this final approval is given by the County because we have no zoning authority and the County hearing is next week.  The request is for a garage conversion to another room with handicapped access.  The variance is required if your driveway runs-up to the garage and for a side yard exception for the 5 foot wide stoop for the handicapped ramp, which overlays one foot closer to the property line than required.

CM Coolen this will allow for access to the house for a wheelchair, a bathroom on the first floor and a bedroom on the first floor that will allow aging in place.

  • CM Coolen to approve V-81-14. CM Eldridge seconded. Approved 5-0.
